The Monticello Chamber of Commerce Halloween Parade at the Monticello Community Center on Saturday was a hit! Hundreds of adorable children decked out in costumes filed through the halls in search of chocolate treasures.

We also had some “treasures” for the moms, dads, and grandparents that accompanied them. We shared information on children’s vision and our InfantSee exams. Our emphasis is on educating the public on the importance of children’s eye exams and the services we provide for all ages.

It was a treat for us to see so many of our patients in the community!

Uptown Eye Care Reviews

This Uptown Eye Care Reviews email came in the other day from one of our patients. It was so sweet that we had to post it and share with all of you. We love hearing feedback like this from our patients!

Dear Uptown Eye Care,

I wanted to write you a note to say thank you very much for your service. I was in need of an eye appointment and a friend recommended Uptown Eye Care. I live in Shakopee, MN, so it was quite a long drive up to Monticello, and I was unsure about whether or not it would be worth it compared to many of the local eye clinics. I am very pleased to say it was worth the drive and more!

The Uptown Eye Care Difference

The park-like atmosphere at Uptown Eye Care in Monticello, MN

The staff was very welcoming and the waiting area was awesome; I really appreciated the free wifi in the beautiful park setting! Karen was the technician for my appointment and she was so helpful. She talked me through each test she was doing and also went through the results. I have been to many different eye doctors before, but have never actually learned anything about my eyes until this appointment.

Dr. Gregory was great as well! She was also helpful in explaining what she was doing and she taught me a lot about my eyes. I was under the impression that I needed to be wearing my glasses all the time and because of that I was interested in getting contact lenses. I had tried them once before and they irritated my eyes so I was concerned about trying them again. After Dr. Gregory checked my vision she said that I did not need to be wearing my glasses all the time and therefore it would be more work for my eyes to have contacts in all day. She told me that my eyes were fairly dry and that was the reason contacts irritated me before. She gave me a sample of eye drops and some recommendations on how to keep my eyes healthy.

I have never had an experience like this and I am happy to say I will be returning in the future!

Thanks,

Anna

Child’s Eye Exam

Child Eye Exam

Back to School To-Do List

Make Your Child’s Vision A Priority!

Every year, 20 million children go back to school with a vision problem that may interfere with the ability to learn or contribute to discipline problems. This year, make your child’s vision a priority. Schedule your Child’s Eye Exam in our Monticello, MN office today.

Call 763-271-2020, Request An Appointment or Contact Us with any questions.

Schedule Your Child’s Eye Exam Now!

Almost 80% of what a child learns in school is presented visually. It stands to reason then, that good vision and learning go hand-in-hand. Yet studies show that only 31% of children between the ages of 6 and 16 have an annual eye exam and 70% of children under 6 years have never had an eye exam.

As a result, 20 million children – about one in four – will go back to school this year with an undiagnosed vision problem that may interfere with learning and contribute to disciplinary problems.

Vision “screenings” performed by a school nurse or pediatrician are helpful but may miss many problems. According to the National Institutes of Health, vision screening methods detected only 40-65% of children’s vision disorders.

The answer is a comprehensive eye exam in our office. Even if your child has passed a vision screening, a comprehensive eye exam can detect diseases or other conditions.

“One in four school-age children has an undiagnosed vision problem that can interfere with learning.”

Vision is critical to learning. Make sure your child is really ready to go back to school. Schedule a back-to-school child’s eye exam today.

PreK Eye Exam Day Results

August is Children’s Vision Month. The Minnesota Optometric Association (http://minnesota NULL.aoa NULL.org/) (MOA) has named August 1, 2012, as PreK Eye Exam Day, a statewide effort that is part of its Good Sight for Kindergarten campaign.  As part of this initiative Uptown Eye Care, a participating MOA member, offered one-time, no-cost eye exams to 5 -year olds entering kindergarten on August 1.

It’s hard to know where to begin talking about our free PreK Eye Exam Day.  It was not only a fun day with excited 5 year olds, but a great educational day for families.

I was able to explain to parents why children should have an eye exam and how their vision affects their performance in school.  While I had fun hearing about new backpacks and school shoes, the kids also learned about eyes and saw photos of the inside of their eyes.  My favorite part of the exam is when they ask me questions. I should start a page of the funny ones!  It was a very rewarding day for me to help a few children not only see better but to also give a few parents symptoms to watch for in the classroom.

Of the 12 children I saw only one had no concerns at all.  Five kids had a binocular vision concern that we will moniter but not treat at this time and three kids had a lazy eye.  The parents of two out of those three children with a lazy eye (or amblyopia) were not previously aware that their child had this condition.  Another two children had an eye turn and another I referred to a specialist for a medical condition which was also unknown to the parents.  It was a busy day!  I am already looking forward to continuing this program next year.   Thank you to my awesome staff and to the Minnesota Optometric Association for making it such a fabulous day!

Where can I get an eye exam?

Where can I get an eye exam?

Choosing an eye care provider is an important health care decision. Your sense of sight is valuable and you will want to choose someone you can trust to care for this precious ability.

Optometrist vs Ophthalmologist: What’s the Difference?

There are two types of eye doctors you will want to consider when making your choice of a eye care provider, Optometrists and Ophthalmologists. Your personal eye health care needs will be a determining factor in your choice.

Ophthalmologists

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in eye care. In addition to providing routine eye health care they also perform eye surgery and treat medical conditions of the eye. Ophthalmologists generally complete 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, as well as additional years of post graduate training in medical and surgical eye care.

Optometrists

Optometrists are eye doctors that have earned a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree. Optometrists complete 4 years of college and 4 years of optometry school. Optometrists also provide routine eye health care, prescribing glasses and contacts, low vision aids, vision therapy and medications to treat eye diseases, and pre-operative and post- operative care.

Opticians

Another type of eye care professional is an Optician. An optician is not an eye doctor, but a professional that uses the prescription written by your eye care provider to assist you in your selection of eye wear. They fit, adjust, and repair glasses and provide training in contact lens insertion and removal and care. Some opticians are specially trained to fit contact lenses, also.

Where can I get an eye exam?

A Snellen eye chart and a "tumbling E" eye exam chart.

While you can obtain an eye exam from several different venues, the quality of an eye exam can vary greatly from one place to another. Some clinics provide low cost exams with minimal testing with the  goal of providing you with an eye glass prescription. Other clinics will focus on a total eye health evaluation, including near and distant vision testing, evaluation of your eyes’ ability to work together, retinal photos, visual field screening, tests for signs of glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye disease, or other eye diseases. Eye care providers may also specialize in specific areas within their field, such as providing care for those with low vision needs, pediatric care, or managing dry eye disease.

Other factors that may influence your choice of providers are whether or not your insurance is accepted by the provider, the friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness of the clinic, convenience of available appointment times, or referrals made by friends and family.

There are different causes of Dry Eye Disease, and, not surprisingly, there are different ways to treat Dry Eye Disease.

Individualized Treatment for Dry Eye Disease

dry eye disease

Dry Eye Disease

Dr. Elaine Happ, OD owns a vision center center for Dry Eye Therapy.  Uptown Eye Care offers comprehensive treatment for dry eye disease. “I have developed a treatment protocol that takes into account that each individual will respond differently to treatment.”

On your initial visit for a dry eye evaluation we will do thorough testing to determine the severity of your condition. Based on your test results we will know if you have mild, moderate or severe dry eye disease. We will then discuss treatment options that will give you the best results. The options could include artificial tear therapy, Omega-3 supplements, punctal plugs, anti-inflammatory drops or prescription strength artificial tears.

We schedule a follow up visit approximately 30 days after we implement the original treatment plan where we can again use the TearLab to see if you are getting positive results with our chosen treatment plan. If necessary, we adjust the therapy to maximize your results.

If you suffer from red, burning or itching eyes or if you get a sandy or gritty feeling, excessive tearing and are sensitive to light you may have dry eye disease. If you have had refractive surgery, or spend long hours in front of a computer or suffer from allergies the symptoms of dry eye disease can be intensified.

Don’t put up with the discomfort of dry eyes. Call our vision center or Contact Us and schedule a dry eye evaluation with Dr. Happ.
